Biographie

After postdocs in Oxford and Harvard, Eric Fabri is now attached to the Centre de théorie polique, Université de Bruxelles. His current research in political theory explores the relationship between property and the environment), the arguments and critics of the right to inherit, and the political philosophy of Cornelius Castoriadis. He is the author of « Pourquoi la propriété privée ? » (2023) and the co-editor of « Rendre le vivant politique » (forthcoming, 2024), « Souveraineté et néolibéralisme » (2023), « Autonomie ou Barbarie. La démocratie radicale de Cornelius Castoriadis » (2015). He also published various articles on Property-Owning Democracy, Locke's theory of appropriation, the legitimation and criticism of private property, Castoriadis' project of autonomy, and Charles Fourier's utopia.

Présentations des recherches
My current research mostly develops on three interconnected topics. The first is the political theory of property (and its alternatives), with a focus on the Lockean justifications of private property. I started working on this topic in my PhD thesis “De la propriété à l’autonomie:  la propriété privée est-elle une institution démocratique?”, and further developed my critical examination of  Locke's theory of appropriation in several chapters and articles. The second axis of my research examines the moral justification of taxing inheritance and wealth transfers. In addition to a special issue, several articles are in preparation to defend a revised version of Mill’s scheme. Thirdly, my research has taken an environmental turn these last years. I cofounded the REVIP (Rendre le vivant politique) research group in 2018 and since then, I worked on the relationship between the concept of property, the modern project of mastering the world, and the environmental crisis. This last axis allows me to connect my interest for theories of property with the social-ontology of Castoriadis and contemporary environmental philosophy.
